CNC Turning

Rotational parts are our highest-volume work. Shafts, sleeves, fittings, spacers and threaded bodies come off CNC lathes with concentricity held between features and threads that gauge cleanly. With live tooling on most machines, a part that used to need turning plus a separate milling operation is finished in one handling.

Why it matters

Concentricity held between features

On a shaft, the bearings matter more than the diameters. Because we turn all diameters in one clamping, the relationship between journals, shoulders and threads stays inside a single tolerance chain instead of accumulating across setups.

Threads that gauge first time

Threads are checked with go/no-go gauges, not just measured. For sealing threads such as G1/4 and NPT we hold the crest and flank form, because a thread that gauges can still leak if the form is wrong.

Live tooling removes a second operation

Cross holes, flats, keyways and off-centre features are milled on the lathe in the same handling. That removes a transfer between machines and the datum error that comes with it.

Bar-fed production for volume

Small diameters run bar-fed with automatic feeding, so a batch of fittings or spacers runs unattended overnight. That is why unit price on turned parts falls sharply between 50 and 500 pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest and smallest diameter you turn?

Ø 3 mm to Ø 300 mm on the standard lathes, up to 600 mm long. Parts below Ø 3 mm or with a very high length-to-diameter ratio are better suited to our Swiss-type machines — we will route the enquiry accordingly.

Which thread standards can you produce?

Metric coarse and fine, UNC/UNF, BSPP and BSPT, NPT, and trapezoidal or lead-screw forms. For sealing threads tell us the mating standard on the drawing so we hold the correct form, not just the pitch.

Can you machine eccentric or off-centre parts?

Yes, using live tooling for cross holes and flats, or a dedicated eccentric fixture for a turned eccentric journal. Send the model and we will confirm the set-up before quoting.

How does price change with quantity?

Set-up cost is the same whether you order one or fifty, so unit price falls steeply in the first few dozen pieces. Above roughly 500 pieces the curve flattens — at that point material and cycle time dominate. We quote several quantity breaks so you can see where the step is.
